Milk is a liquid nutrient produced from the breast of mammals, which their newborn baby must consume to survive for the initial few months. It is the primary source of nutrition for young mammals before they can digest solid food.
1. Before humans started farming
10000 years ago, they used to pet animals and lived their lives on their
milk. The first food of humans was the animal milk.
2. The nutritional component of milk is considered very complex, which means, a lot of nutrients are found in milk and till now not all have been detected. Milk contains all the nutrients essential for our body.

- Water: 88%
- Protein: 7.7 grams
- Carbs: 11.7 grams
- Sugar: 12.3 grams
- Fiber: 0 grams

4. Proteins found in milk are
divided into two groups based on their solubility in water: water-insoluble-
proteins are called casein proteins, while water-soluble proteins are called
whey proteins.
5. Both these types of milk
proteins are considered very healthy for the body, both contain a balanced
amount of high-quality amino acids and both are easily digested in the human body.
6. We humans are the only animals
on earth who consume the milk of other animals.
7. There are several varieties of
milk available at a milk shop: whole milk (3.5% fat), reduced-fat (2%), low-fat
(1%), fat-free and lactose-free.
6. The amount of fat in whole
milk is 3.5%. It is given this name because this type of milk is taken out
of the animal and kept for direct sale after packaging. In this milk, no
adulteration or fat removal is done in any way.
7. There are only two grades of
milk available worldwide: A1 grade and A2 grade.
8. A1 milk comes originally from
western cows, such as Holstein and Jersey. At present, 99% of the milk
available in the market is A1 grade. Whereas A2 milk is originally
obtained from cows of India like, Sahiwal and Gir. There is a difference
in the type of protein in both milk and if we talk about health, then A2
milk is healthier than A1.
9. Ion-Exchange Chromatography is
a technique that can help in detecting which milk is A1 and which is A2.
10. Pasteurization was invented to
prevent milk from souring and rotting, whose inventor was Lewis
Pasteur. Twenty years before milk pasteurization, Lewis Pasteur used the
technology of pasteurization to prevent beer from spoiling. The royal
people of France were upset due to the spoilage of wine, so they all gave Louis
Pasteur the task of finding out the reason for the wine being curdled and
fixing it. After trying the process of pasteurization on alcohol, he tried
using it on milk too, which was absolutely successful.
11. During the discovery of
pasteurization, Lewis Pasteur explained that heating liquids to high
temperatures kill the bacteria present in it.
12. Calcium is not found in soy
milk made from soybean whereas it is found in good quantity in cow's
milk. That is why consuming cow's milk is more beneficial than any other
milk.
13. Packet milk, if kept in the
refrigerator at 35-40 degree Fahrenheit, remains fresh even after 7-10 days of
expiry. For every 5 degree Fahrenheit increase in temperature, the shelf
life of milk is reduced by 50% because bacteria also grow faster as the
temperature rises.
14. Once it was researched on a
species of monkey rhesus macaques that what changes takes place in mother's
milk after giving birth to a female or a male child. In research, it was
found that when the monkey gave birth to a male child, the amount of fat in its
milk increased by 35% and at the same time the amount of protein in the milk was
also found to be higher. When the female was born, the amount of protein and
fat in the milk was less, but in this case, higher amount of calcium was found
in the milk so that the bones of the female child could be made strong. Source
15. Finland is the country in the
world where people drink the most milk. According to a report, they drink per
person about 362 kg of milk every year. The top 5 countries in drinking
milk per capita are: Finland (361.19kg), Sweden (355.86kg), Netherlands
(320.15kg), Switzerland (315kg), and Greece (314.69kg).
16. There are many people all over the world who are unable to digest milk after drinking it and their stomach gets upset, this condition is called lactose intolerance.
18. According to a report, the cows that are named, produce 258 liters more milk per year than those cows
who are not given name. Source
19. In ancient Russia, it was a
practice to keep a frog in a bucket of milk to prevent milk from souring. After
studying this method, scientists found that some special antibiotic substances
are found in the frog's body, which kills the bacteria present in the milk and
do not allow the milk to spoil. Source
20. Platypus, a mammal living in
eastern Australia, does not have nipples in the body for feeding, milk comes
out through their skin. Source
21. Whale milk contains 30-50%
fat, which is much more than the fat found in normal milk. Its milk is not
completely liquid but thick like toothpaste, and due to the high-fat content,
whale's milk keeps moving from one place to another without being mixed with
sea water. Source
22. The most expensive fresh milk
in the world is found in Japan's Nakazawa market, which costs 30 times more
than normal milk. It is believed that this milk has the property of
reducing stress. The reason why it is so expensive is that this milk is
milked from the cow only once a week at dawn when the cow releases the hormone
melatonin the most.
23. A geneticist at Utah State
University has created a spider goat whose udder produces silk-like milk that
is much stronger than ordinary silk. He picked up the web-producing gene
from the spider's body and mixed it with the milk-producing gene in the goat's
body. In this way, the milk produced by that genetically modified goat was
actually silk, this was such a strong silk that it was stronger than
Kevlar. This silk could be used for the treatment of human
ligaments. Source
24. There are some substances in
human milk that newborn babies cannot digest, these substances are used as
staple food for the gut bacteria of those babies. That is why, even after
not being able to digest the milk completely, the stomach of children does not
get upset so quickly.
25. Milk protein is used in the
manufacture of latex, that is, milk protein is also used in making
condoms. Source
26. Some plant-based milks are
also popular as an alternative to animal milks such as soy milk, and almond
milk. This milk made from tree plants is completely vegan friendly and
this milk is also beneficial for those people who have problems in digesting
animal milk.
27. A substance excreted from the
feces of pigeons looks just like milk and some of its properties are also
similar to milk. This substance is called crop milk and pigeons feed it to
their young. However, it cannot be used like normal milk.
28. Hooded seal is such an animal
whose milk has the highest fat content, about 60% and if we talk about the
lowest fat, then black rhinoceros milk contains only 0.2% fat. The fat
content in human milk is between 3 to 5%.
29. Till 11000 years ago, milk was
not digested by humans at all, rather it was like poison for them. At that
time people used to consume milk by turning it into cheese to reduce the amount
of lactose present in it. Source
30. In Canada, it is illegal to give artificial hormones to a cow to produce more milk. Source
31. It is completely illegal to make Sardinian cheese because it is made from goat's milk that has been thawed in the stomach of a newborn lamb. When the lamb drinks milk from the goat's udder and during that time the lamb is killed and its stomach full of milk is kept in an isolated place for several months. In these days, the milk of the stomach hardens and turns into cheese. Then this cheese is sold after separating from the stomach. Source
32. A research has shown that even a slight bite of a tick can develop an allergy to meat and milk in a person's body forever. Source
33. The name of the world's most expensive cheese is 'Pule' which is made from the milk of Balkan donkeys. A pound of this thing costs $ 600 and there are only 100 such donkeys on earth. The most expensive paneer is also made from donkey's milk. Source
