Why Only female mosquitoes bite human?

You will be surprised to know that only female mosquitoes bite us and not male mosquitoes. Why so? Obviously to suck blood. But not for her food but for her eggs.

In fact, both male and female mosquitoes can survive without sucking human blood. They can fill their stomach by sucking the flower nectar only with the sweet juice coming out of it, which gives them enough energy and nutrition for their living. But a female mosquito nourishes her eggs along with her growth and she also needs nutrition for her eggs. The rest of the nutrients she can get from the juice of flowers for the eggs but the need for protein is not fulfilled from that flower juice. For that purpose, she depends on human blood. Humans blood contains proteins, amino acids, and other essential elements in large quantities which are needed by the mosquito eggs for development.

It has been proved from experiments that if a good mixture of amino acids and proteins is injected into a female mosquito, then it does not need to suck human blood separately.

The process of sucking human blood by female mosquitoes is also very strange. It first tears the human skin with its long pointed mouth (Proboscis), then inserts its tube in it and sucks as much blood as it needs. After sucking blood, she puts her saliva in that cut part. Due to which humans are at risk of infection. Due to the introduction of this external element in the human body, that place becomes red because of the body's defense system. This is the reason that after a mosquito bite, there is a feeling of itching in that place. Due to this saliva released in the human body by mosquitoes, many diseases can be caused, such as malaria, dengue etc.

The female mosquito is quite different from the male mosquito, there are some facts that make them easy to identify on the basis of their size and shape.

  • Female mosquitoes are larger in size than male mosquitoes.
  • Only female mosquitoes can make a buzzing sound.
  • The lifespan of female mosquitoes is generally longer than that of male mosquitoes. The life span of a female mosquito is two to four weeks while that of a male mosquito is one to two weeks.
  • Male mosquitoes do not need human blood, so they stay away from human contact.
