Before the twentieth century, science did not know much about the diversity of plants and their lifespan. For the first time, Indian scientist Jagadish Chandra Basu proved in 1920 that trees and plants also have a life like other creatures, they also have a life cycle and reproductive system. Basu told that he also has information about the environment around him, due to which he is also affected. Basu showed that plants feel pain just like us. If plants are cut or poisoned, they also suffer and they can even die.
He demonstrated this for the first time in the auditorium of the Royal Society in London. When he demonstrated publicly through experiments in an auditorium, people were forced to press their fingers under their teeth. Basu injected poison into a plant and said to the scientists sitting there- "Now you all will see how this plant dies." He started the experiment and injected the poison into the plant. But, there was no effect on the plant.
He was so
confident in his discovery that he said in a crowded meeting, regardless of the
poisonous injection, "If this injection did not have any effect on this
plant, then it will not have any effect on other living beings even including
me. As Basu was about to inject himself that poison then a man stood up from
the audience and said- "I accept my defeat Mr. Jagdish Chandra Bose, I had
put water of a similar color in place of poison. I already knew about this
discovery of yours and I didn't want you to become famous by performing
this."
Bose then
started experimenting with real poison and the plant began to wither in front
of everyone. Then all the scientists believed in this discovery of Jagdish
Chandra Basu. He also became convinced that there is life in plants
too. To show that there is life in plants too, he invented a machine
called Crescograph.
